Costume Planning

Costume design is a very important part of horror movies. The protagonist needs to be in a costume that connotes ‘goodness’ and shows that they are the hero in the narrative. The villain, or in our case, the ghost needs to have a costume that invokes fear and uneasiness into our audience, to make them instantly know that they’re the antagonist. This is why costumes are so important, they put across certain non verbal messages that can enhance the viewing experience.

Adam Black- Protagonist
We chose Adam’s costume to be casual, everyday clothes to make him seem like a relatable teen. We wanted our audience to sympathize with Adam as much as possible, so we tried to make him seem like an ordinary teenage boy that our target audience could relate to.
Adam’s costume was jeans and a hoodie, he will wear a backpack and have medium length hair as well as wear glasses.

In some scenes Adam wears pyjamas and a dressing gown. This shows it is night, and also Adam is very vulnerable as he is getting into bed, and is not prepared for what he is about to see. Furthermore, he no longer has his glasses on, this shows he is even more vulnerable and can't see clearly.
We chose these two sets of clothes as they clearly put across the message and the feelings that we wanted.

The Ghost- Antagonist

The ghost's costume needed to be daunting and scary, so we chose a spooky looking baggy white shirt, to make her look unnatural and not just like a common girl. We also decided to have her hair over her face in order to obstruct her eyes and features, this makes her even more creepy and inhuman, as if you can't see someone's eyes it makes you more uncomfortable.
One problem we did have, however, is that some people didn't realise she had her hair over her face, but thought she was just facing the wrong way. Either way, it didn't have a huge effect on our final product.
